The Southern Michigan Schipperke Club was founded in 1987. We are comprised of devoted members from all across the state of Michigan (and have members from several other nearby states such as Indiana and Ohio.) As a nonprofit group, our main goal is to provide support in terms of education, preservation, promotion and shared enjoyment of our beloved “little black devils.” We host several specialty conformations shows each year as well as fun activities such as barn hunts, picnics and other get-togethers. Additionally we offer breeder referral and assist with rescue efforts for Schipperkes needing new homes.
Whether you are currently owned by a Schipperke or are looking for information about Schipperkes our friendly members welcome questions and invite you to attend any of our meetings or events. We love to talk about our Schips!!

SMSC's HistoryIn 1986, the SCA National Specialty show was held in Michigan, and much of the work was done by a dedicated group of Schipperke lovers in the Michigan area, along with the Illiana Schipperke Club. This inspired that small group of people to form their own club, and in 1987 they did just that, with 13 charter members. On May 15, 1987 they held their first meeting and elected their first officers. Initially the club was named Schipperke Club of Southeastern Michigan (1998 the club voted to change its name to the Southern Michigan Schipperke Club, as that more accurate reflected its members). During this time period the club held clinics and supported entries at dog shows, particularly the Detroit Kennel Club's benched show. They had an obedience match in 1991, and on June 10 of that same year they rescued their first Schipperke, Pepper, and placed her in a loving home. Soon the club had its own rescue operation called the "Life Preserver", and they rescued an average of 10 dogs a year.

In 1995, SMSC hosted the SCA National Specialty. The logo the club created for that National is to this day many peoples' favorite logo (seen below, the Schipperke and the car). The club continued to work towards hosting our own Regional Specialty, and they held our first Regional in the late 1990's. They have continued to hold regional specialties every year since.
They also held "Schipnics" each summer, we drew fanciers from all over the state. At these events we would hold fun matches for the show dogs, competitions for the dogs, and costume contests for the long suffering dogs.
In 2005 we held our third National as a group, and our second National as a club. This was one of the largest Nationals of all time, with over 500 entries. It was during this National that the first "History Fair" was held.
In 2014 they held our fourth National as a group.
In the future we are looking at barn hunts, as this seems like an appropriate sport for a Schipperke. They have members active in obedience and rally, and many that show. We would like to add to our membership people who have strong interests in Schipperkes - in showing, or performance, or barn hunts, or rescue... or in a good old costume contest and a bunch of Schipperke summer fun. If you are reading this.... chances are good, we are looking for YOU!

Barn HuntOur club has been looking into learning more about these events and possibly sponsoring them in the future!

Dog ShowsOur club holds two regional specialties a year. We would love to help new exhibitors get started in the ring with their Schipperkes, or have help in putting these shows on, or just watching and cheering on the Schipperkes.
